Overwatch 2 is right around the corner, and even though it shouldn’t really exist , there’s an air of excitement around its launch. The first Overwatch completely reinvented the online shooter space when it launched in 2016, and deserves to be spoken about in the same breath as gaming’s all time greats. Where a lot of hero shooters have characters that either riff on Overwatch or age old tropes, Overwatch’s originality makes it easy to project onto. I played a lot of Overwatch. I owned it across all platforms and put in hundreds of hours across a number of years since its original release. I also bought far too many loot boxes thanks to my compulsive personality and skins my brain convinced me I couldn’t live without. With the power of hindsight it was a pretty bad time, and I’m relieved the RNG has been wiped away in favour of a more honest model of purchasing skins. No longer am I toying with a slot machine and pulling myself further into a spiraling gambling obsession.

 
On the other hand, they could merely be small expansions of the Archives seasonal events where you traverse across bland environments doing battle with generic robots until the objective is reached. These events are... fine, but they aren’t that exciting, lacking the competitive edge of multiplayer that makes Overwatch so wonderfully thrilling to play. Overwatch led the way for the likes of Fortnite , Apex Legends , Paladins, Bleeding Edge, and Valorant . Even Destiny 2 seems to have taken as much from Overwatch as it has the original Destiny. But what those games have in common is the exact thing that stands Overwatch 2 apart for the wrong reasons. Sequels to Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Valorant will never arrive - instead the games continue to evolve with constant updates, new battle passes, and frequent seasonal events pulling you back in. Even Destiny 2, though a sequel itself, is abandoning that model in order to keep building and evolving as it
