Helmets are about to suffer the same fate as arms, arguably worse. While most arm mods give minor buffs in PvE, helmet mods include ammo finders that bypass Destiny 2 armor Guide’s otherwise random ammo economy. Most players run two ammo finders in PvE, but now they’ll be forced to use one if they want to take advantage of Charged with Light or other Orb mods. Crucible players will need to forgo targeting mods altogether if they want their Primary and Special weapons to spawn Orbs.

The only remaining use for Hunters has been to inflict slow through their Revenant Super, activating an Artifact mod called Focusing Lens that stacks with other buffs. Sadly, Bungie removed this interaction with the 30th Anniversary Pack. That patch also nerfed both Hunter dodges in hopes of making the class ability less potent in the Crucible. While that was certainly achieved, it also nerfed Hunters in PvE. Specs like Bottom Tree Nightstalker were tuned around frequently dodging and using your melee, something you can't do as frequently now unless you run The Sixth Coyote or Omnioculus. And if you're a player that loved using Dragon's Shadow or Wormhusk Crown, you can forget about using Gambler's Dodge.

Legend difficulty has a slightly higher chance of spawning a Lightning Round. Your team's score also has a slight bias towards its spawn rate. This has been the experience of many Hunter mains for months now, but it has truly reached a fever pitch with the release of the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack. Nerfs to dodge cooldowns, Duskfield Grenades, ability cooldowns in general , and the presence of debuff mods every season have made Hunters undesirable for most PvE content. It’s gotten so bad that some Hunter mains have been kicked from groups solely for their class of choice.

So how did we get to this point? Most community members have pointed to the Breach And Clear mod in Season of the Splicer, but I feel this slow descent into obsolescence started with the release of Shadowkeep. This expansion did two things:

High-Impact Fusion Rifles haven't been too hot since their rework in Season of the Lost. With that said, Glacioclasm is really special. It's the only Fusion Rifle that can roll with Subsistence and Reservoir Burst , allowing it to auto-reload itself with each Reservoir Burst kill and reactivate that perk. Hunters are supposed to be Destiny’s take on space cowboys and bounty hunters, and the first Destiny reflected this well. Hunters had mobile Supers, a mix of ranged and utility melee abilities, and the Nightstalker’s Shadowshot Super doubled as excellent crowd control and Super regeneration for your team. When all else failed, you could also rely on invisibility to get yourself out of trouble.

Crucible players might want to skip this weapon altogether and farm for a good Cartesian Coordinate or Plug One instead . If you really want to make this weapon work, keep an eye out for Under Pressure and either Backup Mag or High-Impact Reser Since these mods only work for certain damage types, there’s a good chance that these mods require a specific affinity to go on your helmet. If you’re someone who decides to change their loadout and just so happens to switch damage types, you’ll need to Masterwork your helmet again every time you switch weapons . That’s tremendously inconvenient and compounds the mod swapping problems builds already deal with. And if you’re a newer player who can’t afford to Masterwork a helmet, you’ll need to spend multiple Cores and Prisms every time you switch guns. This stifles build variety for no reason, and I seriously hope the Orb mods don’t behave this way.

Bungie has the perfect opportunity to fix these issues with the Void 3.0 rework that’s coming with The Witch Queen . Nightstalker is one of the Hunter’s best PvE subclasses, so this rework will either make or break Hunters for the foreseeable future. There’s a chance to revitalize the Hunter with some unique mechanics that set it apart from the other Void subclasses. But this is also a chance for Bungie to homogenize all of the classes even further with class-agnostic Fragments and buffs. For the sake of all Hunter mains, I hope Bungie opts for the former.
